Gender Equality Week: Actionable Steps for Gender Equality in the Maritime Industry
It’s estimated that there are 1.2 million seafarers across the world. Only 24,059 are women.
While the maritime industry has a long history, women remain significantly underrepresented.
Statistics reveal that…
- Women account for 29% of the overall maritime workforce worldwide
- Women make up only 1.2% of seafarers worldwide (predominately in the cruise industry)
- 34% of the shore-based workforce in ship-owning companies are women
- Just 1.28% of STCW certified seafarers worldwide are women
- Female staff in search and rescue teams in national maritime authorities account for only 10% of the workforce
The good news is that while these numbers might look a little low, they are trending upwards as more women look for careers in the maritime industry! According to the BIMCO/ICS 2021 Seafarer Workforce Report, the positive trend in gender balance represents nearly a 46% increase compared to numbers in the same report from 2015.
These numbers demonstrate a growing interest in maritime careers among women, but more needs to be done to achieve gender equality.
Wondering what you can do to help bridge the gap to promote gender equality and inclusivity in the maritime industry? Keep reading!
