5 Tips for Creating a Pronoun-Inclusive Workplace

It’s important to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.

One crucial aspect of this is respecting individuals’ pronoun preferences. Pronouns are an essential part of a person’s identity, and using someone’s correct pronouns demonstrates respect and inclusion.

Pronouns are the words we use to refer to ourselves. They can be gendered (e.g., he/him, she/her) or gender-neutral (e.g., they/them). For some people, their pronouns align with their biological sex, but for others, they may be different.

  • Respect: Using someone’s correct pronouns shows that you respect their identity and choices.
  • Inclusion: A pronoun-inclusive workplace creates a sense of belonging for all employees.
  • Mental Health: Misgendering someone can have a negative impact on their mental health and well-being.
  1. Encourage Pronoun Sharing: Create a safe space where employees feel comfortable sharing their preferred pronouns. This can be done through team-building activities or even by adding a pronoun field to employee profiles!
  2. Educate Your Team: Provide training and resources to help employees understand the importance of pronoun inclusion and how to use them respectfully.
  3. Use Gender-Neutral Language: Avoid making assumptions about someone’s gender based on their appearance or name. Use gender-neutral language whenever possible, such as “they/them” instead of “he/she.”
  4. Avoid Forcing Pronouns: It’s important to remember that forcing employees to use pronouns they are not comfortable with is counterproductive. Instead, focus on creating a culture of respect and understanding.
  5. Update Company Policies: Review your company’s policies and procedures to ensure they are inclusive of all gender identities and expressions. This may include updating your employee handbook and non-discrimination policies.
